dpa [Deutsche Presseagentur] - 23 August 2004 - Science/literature / A Mainz researcher finds a new Shakespeare portrait

Mainz/Darmstadt (dpa) - A Mainz Shakespeare researcher claims to have discovered a new portrait of the English poet taken from life. A comparison with the death mask of Shakespeare kept in Darmstadt shall prove the genuineness of the bust in autumn. She had already examined the bust in 1998, the Anglicist Hildegard Hammerschmidt Hummel told dpa on Monday.

First scientific examinations had supported her thesis that this was a genuine portrayal of Shakespeare, which had hitherto not been recognized as such. Where the bust is kept, Hammerschmidt-Hummel will not disclose until next year when her book on Shakespeare’s authentic portraits will be published.

The Darmstadt Shakespeare death mask and the new bust shall be compared with the help of computer tomography. According to information from Professor Bernd Kober, radiologist at the General Hospital in Darmstadt, the death mask has already been measured threedimensionally in the computertomograph at the beginning of August. Meanwhile its genuineness is regarded as indisputable. The bust shall be measured in Great Britain with the a tomograph of the same type.

A journey of the death mask to England or of the bust to Darmstadt is not possible for safety reasons, Hammerschmidt Hummel reported. The mere transport of the face imprint from the Hessian State and University Library to the clinic and back, which lasted two hours, had required ‘enormous security measures’.
